Religious doesn’t always mean Christian Christian doesn’t always mean Christian The word Christian, in a title is not a guarantee that the author is born again. Many consider that being a Christian entails nothing more than being Christ-like. They have no understanding of the requirements of actual childhood. For them, Christianity can be adopted and promoted like it was a sports team. Many books are based upon the publishing group’s dogmas. You must carefully investigate the history, doctrines and dogmas of the authors and their groups. Many newer versions of The Bible have been written for the sake of a certain theological or world view and are at odds with The Author and Finisher of our faith. Systematic Theology defines itself this way: “The study of the deity of God as it applies to the contemporary society and mindset.” “As it applies to…” dictates that the study must change or the Subject of the study must change with the changes of the society and the mindset. Each time these two consequences change the conclusions reached on the deity must also be changed and reapplied to the newly adopted parameters. This leads to god as a concept and not to God as Sovereign. If we follow that line of reasoning we can see how we got where we are today. If God’s relevancy changes with the society what He said was a sin yesterday cannot be a sin today. The society has declared its mind has changed about that sin. For God to be relevant today He must invalidate yesterday’s pronouncement of sin. Now that God is not dependable—the society says He isn’t, we have to look to other forms of religious wisdom and expression to supplement and shore up this now functionally obsolete gospel. This school of thought is propagated through books and new versions of the bible. Always read the foreword, the introduction and the preface before buying a book. If you are still not sure about the book email the title to pastor at: pastor@achaia-mbc.org and we will research it for you. A good rule of thumb would be to run all titles and authors not listed above by the pastor before you purchase them. On the subject of Bible versions: The only real difference in versions of the bible is the final definitions of the words used to translate the bible into English. Under the guise of making the bible more readable contemporary definitions are given and traditional definitions for words are dropped. Example: many new versions use the word endurance for the word patience. Traditionally, endurance is one of many words used to support the definition of patience. In these versions all of that is dropped and an inferior word now stands as the complete definition for the word God used originally. From there, the term difficult passage loses its meaning. They are reinterpreted to read better and the reader gets what the translator thinks God may have meant. Not only does the reader lose the privilege of pondering over the mystery that God enfolded into the difficult passage, but he/she is not even aware that such a passage exists. A study of parallel bibles will help to illustrate the differences. Almost all versions are good for devotional reading. Serious word studies should be done in the KJV and associated KJV works. I do not recommend: NIV: In any form or format. NASB: In any form or format. CEV: In a study format, OK for reading. NLT: In a study format, OK for reading. NRSV: In a study format, OK for reading. ESV: In a study format, OK for reading. The Message I do recommend: KJV: All formats. NKJV for reading only NCV for reading only Ryrie Study Bible Amplified Bible—(Some definitions should be checked with the KJV). Our reference library contains a variety of books and reference works for reading and study. It also contains sets that would usually be too expensive for the average Christian to purchase for themselves. Our reference library is open to anyone needing to do research. Please call the pastor to make an appointment. None of the books, however, can be removed from our library. If anyone wishes to donate any reference works to our library, it will be greatly appreciated. We are working on a special display where all of our donors will receive permanent recognition for their kindness. Certain donated quotes, poems, graphics, and pictures with legends of a Christian nature may be displayed on our website in the library section. Accepted donations will have the donor’s name and state listed. Please send us your suggestions for additions to our library with a brief explanation of why the title should be added to our library. achaia@achaia-mbc.org Thank you all so very much for helping to make our site work better for you.
